House Rule Modifications (U5-U10)

PLAYER BEHAVIOR ON THE FIELD - If a player, usually younger ones, are not fully participating with the team, seem distracted and unwilling to play, cry all the time, hits others, there might be something going on that the parent needs to be aware of and address. The league supports its coaching and their great volunteerism to coach the players. The coaches has a responsibility to coach the players. While they can help with small issues off the field of play, it is expected that parents will address issues of basic commitment and behavior with their child. If the coach can help, please offer suggestions. Everyone's goal is a positive and fun time for everyone!

LYSL games are officiated under the FIFA Laws of the Game. LYSL and the Livermore Referee Association (LRA) meet to review special modifications for the House program. The links below will outline the modification for U5, U6, U7, U8, and U10. There are no modifications for U11 and above. Note: High Comp rules are not modified by LYSL.

Please note that the CYSA Team Manual that coaches are given each year contains some rule guidelines that the leagues may or may not use. The rules we use are listed below.

In the end, the referee's judgment on the field is final, regardless of CYSA or LYSL rules or guidelines.

Below is an overall view of the House U5-U19 teams and games.

Changed in 2005!  U9-10

  • Age Pure = In the past, all age groups in the House program covered two years of age in the their make up. This has changed. U9 and U10 are now age pure in the House. Both age groupings use the same modified rules.

Changed in 2004!  U7-8 "Goals"

  • Age Pure = In the past, all age groups in the House program covered two years of age in the their make up. This has changed. As the 2004 House Informational sheet handed out at registration stated, CYSA guidelines show age pure for all programs. Instead of changing the entire House program at once, the board decided to test this change and evaluate its impact with the youngest age group. U8 is now U7 and U8. The same AGC manages these 6- and 7-year olds as before. Team formation for these player is now split by age, then geographical location and then by the usual league methods outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures.

  • Same Sided Games = CYSA guidelines for small sided games are being attempted by LYSL for the first time with U7 and U8 teams. U7 teams play 5 to a side (5v5) WITHOUT a goalie. U8 play 6 to a side (6v6) with a goalie.

Here is a power point file that talks about small sided games that may make things more clear.

Changed in 2003!  U5-6 "Goals"

  • Age Pure = In the past, all age groups in the House program covered two years of age in the their make up. This has changed. As the 2003 House Informational sheet handed out at registration stated, CYSA guidelines show age pure for all programs. Instead of changing the entire House program at once, the board decided to test this change and evaluate its impact with the youngest age group. U6 is now U5 and U6. The same AGC manages these 4- and 5-year olds as before. Team formation for these player is now split by age, then geographical location and then by the usual league methods outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures.

It is expected that next year, the U8 age group will divide similarly into U7 and U8. The following year, U10 will follow suit. U12 and above will not be age pure due to reduced number of available players.

  • Same Sided Games = CYSA guidelines for small sided games are being attempted by LYSL for the first time with U5 and U6 teams. U5 teams play 3 to a side (3v3) and U6 play 4 to a side. The small number of players on the field are accommodated with the newer, smaller field that is also within CYSA guidelines.

It is not known at this time if U7-8 will play small sided games next season.

  • No Nets = Cones will be used to indicate the "goal" target for the players. Goal bars and nets will not be used as it is the intention that U5 and U6 concentrate on ball handling and game mechanics, not actually scores. Scoring in U5-8 is not done for this same reason.
