 Benefits
and Time Commitment
Benefits:
The High Comp Program offer our youth an opportunity to play at a
higher level of skill with a longer playing season than that
available in our House Program.
Playing in the LYSL High Comp Program yields the following benefits:
-
Players receive the opportunity to compete at the highest
possible level against other similar youth teams and can
maximize their talents and skills
-
The level of training and coaching is more advanced which
supplements, directs, and guides the development of these
talented players effectively.
-
This development process provides higher chances for our youth
players to be considered and scouted for even higher levels of
competition such as the Olympic Development Program (ODP), High
School, and College.
Time Commitment:
The goal for High Comp is for our children to play soccer at a more
competitive level but above all have fun! Players are expected to
participate in two or more practice sessions per week one of which
under the guidance of a professional trainer. In addition, there are
scrimmages, tournaments, league games on weekends, and post season
cup play.
Training typically begins in June and runs
until cup play is over. League play begins in early September and
ends in November. Games are played on Saturdays and Sundays.
Practices are usually 2-3 times per week at least one of which
utilizes professional trainers.
Beginning in August and throughout the playing
season, there are many tournaments available from which teams may
choose participate. This primarily applies to age U11 and above.
It is highly recommended that teams participate in at least four to
five tournaments during the year. Depending on the tournament the
coach selects, overnight travel may be required.

The purpose of tryouts is to ensure that all players are offered a
fair opportunity to tryout and be considered for a High Comp team.
The schedule, evaluation staff, and format are determined annually
by the Technical Director, with assistance from the High Comp
Committee. The date, time, and location will be posted on the LYSL
website, High Comp section as soon as field space is secured and
logistics worked out. Tryouts generally consist of individual timed
assessments, small-sided games, and scrimmage sessions over the
course of multiple days.
High Comp teams will be selected from the list of available players
that participated in the tryout process. Player selection for teams
will be made by the Technical Director in cooperation with selected
evaluators (e.g. trainers, coaches, etc.). Selections will be based
on player ranking within the team from the previous year and / or
teams needing to improve in a specific area. In addition, new
players will be given the edge in final assessment over those
returning and selections must come from the top 18-20 ranked players
by the evaluators.
At the end of tryouts, a meeting will be held with the Technical
Director, evaluators, and High Comp Committee. Division 1 teams are
formed first, then Division 3. Once the rosters are finalized,
player notification begins. Selected players will be notified as
soon as practical after tryouts as teams are formed. Rosters will
be posted at
www.lysl.org/highcomp/hcteams within a few weeks of tryout
completion for the age group. LYSL registered players not selected
for a high comp team will automatically be placed into the
recreational program and contacted at a later date.
Team fundraising is an excellent way to offset many if not all
expenses associated with participation in the High Comp Program. A
scholarship program is also available for qualifying applicants
which can offset part of the basic High Comp fee.
 Expectations
Support:
Parents are expected to be supportive of each player and the team as
a whole. A commitment for the entire season needs to be made up
front in order for the team to be successful. Parents need to make
sure that player transportation to and from practices and games are
provided and that players come ready and properly equipped to play
on time. The following list is called the Ten Commandments for
Parents from the CYSA Team Manual:
-
Emphasize
enjoyment and fun
-
Praise
effort as well as improvement
-
Avoid
heckling, jeering, or distracting players
-
Applaud
positive performance by either team
-
Appreciate
a good play no matter who makes it
-
Always
encourage your child to play by the rules
-
Respect
the judgment and strategy of the coach
-
Relax and
enjoy the game whether your team wins or not
-
Attempt to
understand and be informed of the rules
-
Avoid
criticizing players, coaches, or referees both during and after
the game
-
Don't
coach from the sidelines
Playing Time: According to League by-laws, the league guarantees
each player on a HC team a minimum playing time equivalent to 25% of
the season with the following exceptions: health and discipline. The
exceptions reduce the minimum playing time to zero. All coaches are
reminded that all players should receive fair playing
time. A good win / loss ratio is important but player development is
more important.
Volunteers:
The coach should be coaching the players, not performing every task
in the management of the team. To accomplish this, parents are
expected to volunteer to help the team in some way. Here are the
most common tasks:
Treasurer -The Treasurer is responsible for setting up
a team bank account. A coach or coach's spouse cannot be the
Treasurer. All fees are collected by the Treasurer and
deposited into the team bank account. The Treasurer then writes
a check payable to LYSL for all fees owed by the team.
Team
Parent - The "go to" person for parents to ask questions
and raise issues. This helps free up the time for the coach to
just coach the kids.
Fundraiser Coordinator - The league has determined not
to do general fundraisers. The league fundraising coordinator
will be able to help you if you decide to do a team fundraiser,
collect funds, distribute materials, and interface with other
fundraising representatives.
Publicity - Local papers will publish the details of the
games if they are submitted to the league's publicity website in
a timely manner.
Trash
- Our fields can be taken away from us to use at any time. The
most complaints we get from LARPD, LVJUSD, and the park
neighbors is the trash left behind. Pick up and properly
disposed of all remaining water bottles, wrappers, etc in the
entire area of the field used.
 Uniforms
HC Apparel Free
Issue Program
* Drop off clean and usable HC
apparel with any member of the HCC
* Apparel will be stored at the league office at 1816 Holmes St.
* Apparel can be taken for reuse (no strings attached) by stopping
by the league office during any regularly scheduled monthly meeting
(Second Wednesday or Third Tuesday 7:30-9:3- p.m.)
LYSL's High Comp teams were one of the first west coast teams to be
wearing Kelme's Celta uniform in Forest green and white.
PIM 06-02 outlines the LYSL High Comp Uniform policy.
Uniforms are ordered through the team to the appropriate HC
Representative. The league places the order, then the league delivers
the uniforms to the team representative.
The league's official uniform vendor is
"Dayak's Den".
Replacement high comp uniforms can be obtained directly from Dayak's
Den. Jerseys are not returnable since the are pre-printed.
Our
vendor for uniforms is Dayak's Den. Uniforms are purchased and
distributed through the league. Go by and check out other items in their store at
320 West Larch Road, Tracy, CA. 209-833-8488,
dayaksden@sbcglobal.net.
