Coach Age Specific Clinic

A peek into a session.

Age Specific Training Clinics provide new and experienced coaches with some basic approaches as well as some new tips running a practice. These sessions are free and on a drop-in basis for all league coaches. [click here for schedule] LYSL is proud to be able to offer coaches these special sessions where the focus is on age appropriate coaching and skill techniques. Troy Dayak, LYSL Technical Director, personally teaches these clinics.

Below are some photos from a recent U5-U8 clinic that Troy held on 8/7/06. The clinic is a sample practice during which drills, player feedback, and scrimmages are used to demonstrate coaching techniques to observing clinic attendees. Throughout the sessions the coaches get explanations of what is being taught and tips to enhance the player's enjoyment and learning during the practice. Below is an example of what the age specific clinics are like.

At the beginning of the clinic, coaches take a position so that they can observe the session with the players as well as hear the Technical Director's direction, encouragement, and feedback to the players during the activities. Players are told what the next activity is and how to do it.

Scrimmage drill begins that focuses on using the newly learned techniques that were practiced at the beginning of the session.

Players do a scrimmage, one set of players at a time, showing their skills as the coaches watch. The started using the drills from the start of the session right away.

Coaches watch the scrimmage unfold where the players are all engaged in the activity and using the new skills.

Throughout the session, the Technical Director explains to the coaches the results of the last player activity, what will happen next, and why. The sessions run fluid with constant activity for the players and information/tips to the coaches.

Everyone celebrates the goal during the scrimmage drill (well, maybe not everyone on the blue team).

The players acknowledge success with the new drills. The coaches are strongly encouraged to give honest, positive, and frequent feedback to the players as they practice.

After the scrimmage drill, players huddle for team time talk.

After the session, the players raise their hands to tell the coach (in this case, the Technical Director) what they learned today.

High Fives to end the session. Good session!

Wrap up with Questions and Answers with the coaches.

Thank you to all the coaches that attend the sessions. These clinics exist to help support our coaches! We welcome your feedback!
